what's the plan?

Delivering Homes That Meet Local Needs

Housing is one of the most important challenges facing Glastonbury. The Neighbourhood Plan seeks to ensure that future housing development meets the needs of local people whilst respecting the character of the town and responding to environmental and infrastructure constraints.

What are we trying to do?

To provide a range of high-quality and affordable homes that meet the needs of current and future residents.

Why is it important?

Many people face challenges finding suitable housing within the local area.

The community has identified a need for:

  • More affordable housing
  • Smaller homes for first-time buyers
  • Homes for people wishing to downsize
  • Housing suitable for older residents
  • Sustainable and energy-efficient homes
  • Housing that reflects local needs rather than simply increasing numbers

At the same time, development must take account of flood risk, drainage, infrastructure capacity, and environmental constraints.

WHAT'S THE FOCUS?

The Plan seeks to:

  • Support affordable housing
  • Encourage smaller homes and a balanced housing mix
  • Support housing for older residents
  • Encourage self-build and custom-build opportunities
  • Promote innovative and sustainable housing design
  • Ensure development is supported by appropriate infrastructure
  • Encourage energy-efficient and climate-responsive homes
  • Improve flood resilience and drainage solutions
  • Support renewable energy technologies within new development
  • Ensure new development responds to identified local housing needs

What would success look like?

A wider choice of homes that enables local people to remain within the community throughout different stages of life, whilst ensuring new development is sustainable, resilient, and supported by appropriate infrastructure.
