STEP, RIDE, THRIVE

Connecting communities to nature

Step, Ride, Thrive is a new community health and wellbeing project helping local people access the Avalon Marshes through walking, cycling and public transport.

The project has been developed by the Avalon and Poldens Local Community Network, with support from parish councils, charities, transport providers and local organisations. It has received £35,000 from the Somerset Association of Local Councils’ Community Health and Wellbeing Fund and will run as a pilot project through to March 2026.

The aim is simple: to make it easier for residents to reach one of Somerset’s most important natural landscapes, while supporting healthier lifestyles, reducing social isolation and encouraging more sustainable ways to travel.

Why the project matters

The Avalon Marshes are a nationally important wetland landscape, home to nature reserves, wildlife habitats and open spaces that support both biodiversity and wellbeing.

However, many people living nearby are unable to access these places easily. Some residents do not have a car, while others may find walking or cycling routes difficult to navigate without support. Step, Ride, Thrive is designed to remove some of these barriers and help more people enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of time spent in nature.

What the project includes

The project brings together three main areas of activity.

A pilot extension of the number 668 bus route will introduce a new stop at the Avalon Marshes Centre, connecting the area with Glastonbury, Street, Cheddar and surrounding villages.

Cycling support will include free Dr Bike health check events, bike maintenance workshops for school pupils and the development of affordable cycle hire at the Avalon Marshes Centre.

A programme of guided walks, wellbeing activities and downloadable walking guides will also help residents explore the landscape safely and confidently.

Glastonbury Town Council’s Role

Glastonbury Town Council is supporting the project by holding the project fund and managing its expenditure. This reflects the Council’s commitment to community wellbeing, sustainable travel and better access to the natural environment.

The project also supports wider local aims around health, inclusion, climate action and connection between neighbouring communities.
