Work Now Underway on Glastonbury’s Market Cross

Glastonbury Town Council is pleased to announce that work is now underway on the Market Cross, following a wait for the necessary conservation approvals and the completion of the required processes.

The repairs are being carried out by D.J. Lang Stonemason, who previously worked on the Market Cross in 2023 and brings experience of caring for this distinctive town landmark.

Scaffolding was erected after inspections identified loose masonry that could pose a risk to people using the Market Place. A structural engineer subsequently completed a detailed assessment, with the resulting report shared with the specialist stonemason to inform the repairs.

As a Grade II listed monument, the Market Cross requires a sensitive approach to maintenance and repair. The Council has been working with Somerset Council’s Conservation Officer to ensure that the proposed work protects the structure’s historic character while addressing the identified safety concerns. Agreeing the appropriate repairs and securing the necessary approvals have been essential steps in allowing work to proceed.

Standing at the heart of the Market Place, the present Market Cross was erected in 1846 to a design by architect Benjamin Ferrey. Built from Bath stone in the Perpendicular Gothic style, its elaborate stonework and distinctive silhouette make it one of Glastonbury’s most recognisable landmarks and an important reminder of the town’s long-standing market tradition.

We recognise that the scaffolding has been in place for longer than originally anticipated, and we thank residents, businesses and visitors for their continued patience. With the necessary approvals now in place, the repairs can move forward, helping to safeguard the Market Cross for everyone who lives in, works in and visits Glastonbury.

Further updates will be shared as work progresses.
