His Worship the Mayor of Glastonbury, Cllr Michael White, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Zoe Price, joined St Dunstan’s School students, Rev Alice Watson from St John’s Church, Father Mark from St Mary’s Catholic Church, and members of the public at the Peace Pole in St Dunstan’s Car Park to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
His Worship the Mayor was kindly invited by St Benedict’s School to take part in their Holocaust Memorial Service, honouring the Jews and all others who suffered during the Holocaust.
St Dunstans Student, S Peace wrote a poem to commemorate the day. Glastonbury Town Council thank her for letting us share her poem on our website.
The Lights That Should Be Shining by S Peace
Forced to hide
Force to abide
Force to survive
Power that silenced
Innocent people
like you, like me
Jews running from what once
was a safe haven
Then captured against their will
Stars that should be shining
in the night sky
but instead are worn as a constant
reminder of unnecessary shame
Today we see the boots of many
lined up along the River Danube
A reminder of those lives lost
We remember
We remember
We remember
