A New Chapter in the Care of Glastonbury Cemetery

Glastonbury Town Council is pleased to announce a renewed programme of specialist maintenance and management for Glastonbury Cemetery, following a review by the Staffing Committee.

The cemetery is a much-valued space for families, friends, and visitors who come to remember loved ones, reflect, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. In recent months, the Council has received comments, concerns, complaints, and even compliments regarding the length of the grass in some areas of the cemetery, and we would like to update residents on the steps being taken to improve standards across the site.

The former Cemetery Warden retired in December 2025 after many years of dedicated service. Following their retirement, the Staffing Committee took the decision to spend six months assessing the full scope of work required to manage and maintain the cemetery effectively. This period has allowed the Council to gain a clearer understanding of the ongoing maintenance needs of the site and to consider the most sustainable approach for the future.

At its meeting on 15 June 2026, the Staffing Committee agreed to appoint specialist contractors to undertake the regular maintenance of the grassed areas and wildflower sections within the cemetery. Before this begins, some initial works will be carried out to bring the cemetery back to a higher standard. The contracted maintenance programme is expected to commence during the week beginning 22 June 2026. It is planned that during the winter, one cut/strim per month will be undertaken and during the spring, summer, and autumn, two cuts/strims per month will be undertaken across the entire site whilst allowing wildflowers such as ox-eye daisies and primroses to flourish.

The Council recognises that maintaining the cemetery has become increasingly challenging; alongside the responsibilities of caring for the cemetery, Glastonbury Town Council has taken on a significant amount of additional land through the devolution of services and assets. Combined with periods of staff shortages, this has placed considerable pressure on the Council’s operational teams.

However, the decision to appoint specialist contractors marks an important step forward. It will enable a more proactive and consistent approach to managing the cemetery and help ensure that standards are maintained throughout the year for all who visit the cemetery.

As part of this renewed approach, the Council will also be considering how different areas of the cemetery are managed. Some sections may be maintained in a more natural, wildlife-friendly manner, while other areas will be kept more formally maintained to provide an attractive and welcoming environment for cemetery visitors. This balanced approach aims to support biodiversity while ensuring the cemetery remains a respectful and well-presented place for all who visit.

The Council would like to thank residents and visitors for their patience and understanding during this period of transition. We are committed to ensuring that Glastonbury Cemetery remains a peaceful, respectful, and well-cared-for space that can be appreciated by families, friends, visitors, and the wider community for many years to come.
